Debate Skills for Beginners

Debate has a reputation for being intimidating, but at its heart it is simply structured conversation. For children, learning to argue a point respectfully builds confidence, critical thinking and the ability to listen — skills that serve them far beyond any competition.

Start with an opinion and a reason

The foundation of debate is "I think… because…". Practising this at home — about anything from the best ice-cream flavour to a school rule — teaches children to back opinions with reasons.

Listen to the other side

Good debaters listen as well as they speak. Encourage your child to repeat the opposing view fairly before responding. This builds empathy and stronger arguments.

Structure a simple case

Three reasons, each with an example, make a clear and memorable argument. The "point, evidence, explain" pattern keeps things organised.

Stay calm and respectful

Debate is about ideas, not winning at all costs. A composed, courteous speaker is far more persuasive than a loud one.

For guided practice in a supportive group, School of Confidence in Toa Payoh helps children build argumentation and speaking skills step by step.
