How to Build a Daily Reading-Aloud Habit

Few habits do as much for a child’s communication as reading aloud. Just ten minutes a day builds vocabulary, fluency and the confidence to use one’s voice — and it costs nothing but time together.
Make it a fixed part of the day
Habits form around anchors. Tie reading to something that already happens — after dinner, before bed — so it becomes automatic rather than another thing to remember.
Let your child do the reading
Take turns. When your child reads a paragraph aloud, gently encourage clear pronunciation, natural pauses and a little expression. Resist correcting every slip; fluency grows with comfort.
Choose the right level
Pick books that are a touch easy for reading aloud — success builds momentum. Save harder books for when you read to them.
Celebrate progress
Record a favourite passage now and again. Hearing improvement over weeks is motivating for children and parents alike.
Reading aloud pairs naturally with structured speaking practice. School of Confidence in Toa Payoh helps children aged 5–17 turn everyday fluency into real speaking confidence.
